Modern Segregation and Health
It is time to take ACTION.

Message

Modern segregation causes many problems such as a lack of resources in poor or minority neighborhoods. In this time when health has become extremely important, many minorities have higher covid-19 infection rates. Learn more about this important issue and take action!

What is modern segregation?

Modern segregation is when resources like education, housing, medical care, and healthy food, are segregated along racial lines. Modern segregation is caused by many things, including redlining, white flight, and affordable housing. When there are segregated communities, it is very easy to have resources in one community versus another. Families, businesses, and companies tend to choose to open in white neighborhoods, not dependent of the wealth. If a neighborhood has more than 10% of black people, buisnesses and families are less likely to move or open their companies. Since companies are more likely to move to white neighborhoods, black and minority neighborhoods don't have as many resources as white neighborhoods. Black neighborhoods also get less funding which affects the amount of empty houses, and in general, house buying demand. This in turn, creates economic segregation that turns away business.

How does modern segregation affect education?

Black schools are often overcrowded and don't have as many supplies and resources that they need. In Chicago, CPS closed 50 schools. They were half empty schools and they de-populated in battered neighborhoods. The students from the underpreforming schools were sent to equally unperforming schools and the promises for better resources were broken. Most of the underperforming schools were in neighborhoods of color who now have too many students and not enough resources. This is an example of how modern segregation affects eduaction.

How does modern segregation connect to health?

Good health is vital to living longer and saving lives. Especially during COVID-19 health disparites are being seen more than ever and the people affected need information and resources. There are many food deserts in black neighborhoods which affects their health in a negative way. People of color also get worse health/medical care and attention than their white counterparts. This inequality of healthcare and lack of information and resources are the main reason why health disparities exist.
